Community School Strategy
At Highlands, it is our practice to create the best possible learning experience for all of our students. Our dedicated staff is committed to continually improving student achievement. We establish goals that reflect high expectations and provide rigorous instruction to meet the needs of our students.
As a Community School, Highlands aims to integrate a focus on academics, health and social services, youth and community development, and community engagement. Our goal is to be a flourishing community fueled by a collaborative partnership of students, parents, educators, and community organizations.
Additionally, Highlands has been a leader among Pittsburg Unified’s elementary schools through the launch of the district’s first ever Young Men of Purpose program and formalized Check-In/Check-Out system. The Highlands Young Men of Purpose program is designed to provide male students with relatable mentoring content that they can apply to their lives. Students in the program participate in weekly activities and discussions centered on character, citizenship, and academics. Furthermore, students attend college tours and workplace visits and also spearhead service projects in the community. Check-In/Check-Out is a PBIS behavior intervention which supports school culture and climate through reinforcing positive behaviors. Highlands launched both programs in 2018 and has since collaborated with other elementary schools that are also rolling out Young Men of Purpose and Check-In/Check-Out at their respective sites.

- An After School Program
- Linkages to food, shelter, and basic needs through our Parent Liaison
